When Gudea received a dream commanding him to build the E-ninnu temple, he could not understand the vision and journeyed to Nanshe's shrine, where the goddess of dream interpretation revealed the meaning of each sign and set him on the path to build Ningirsu's house.
Ningishzida served as Gudea's personal deity, his divine intercessor who appeared at his side in the temple-building dream and accompanied him before the great gods.
Ninurta (as Ningirsu) appeared to King Gudea of Lagash in a dream, commanding him to rebuild the E-ninnu temple. The Gudea Cylinders record the god's detailed instructions and Gudea's pious compliance (c. 2100 BCE).
