Mythology & Lore
The Fall of Sigmund
Two men sought Hjördís, daughter of King Eylimi: Sigmund the Völsung, old but renowned, and King Lyngi, son of Hunding. She chose Sigmund. Lyngi raised an army.
In the Völsunga saga, the battle turned when Odin appeared on the field and thrust his spear against Sigmund's sword. The blade shattered. Sigmund fell. Eylimi was killed beside him.
Hjördís found Sigmund among the dead after the fighting ended. He told her she carried his son and commanded her to gather the broken shards of the sword. A great weapon would be forged from them for the child. She collected the fragments. The smith Regin would later forge them into Gram.
Hjálprekr's Court
Viking ships belonging to King Hjálprekr of Denmark found Hjördís among the fallen. She was brought to his court and received with honor. She married Hjálprekr's son Álfr, and it was there that Sigurd grew up under the tutelage of the smith Regin, who reforged his father's sword and sent him to face Fáfnir.
