Mythology & Lore

The Wandering Husband

Snorri records in the Gylfaginning that Óðr was Freyja's husband and that he went away on long paths. Freyja wept for him, and her tears were red gold. She traveled among strange peoples searching for him, taking different names as she went.

They had a daughter named Hnoss, whose name means "treasure." She was so beautiful that her name became a word for precious things. A second daughter, Gersemi, also meaning "jewel," is attributed to the couple.

Beyond this, the sources say almost nothing about Óðr himself. He is defined entirely by his absence: Freyja loved him, he left, and her grief turned to gold.
