Mythology & Lore

Created in Light

The Bundahishn describes Gayomard as created radiant, standing on the left bank of the river Veh Daiti while the Primordial Bull stood on the right. In his original state he would have lived forever, the first human, fashioned by Ahura Mazda as the sixth of the seven material creations. But Angra Mainyu's assault on creation brought death even to him. After thirty years of life in the age of mixture, Gayomard was struck down. The first death in existence.

Seed and Metals

When Gayomard died, his seed fell to the earth and was purified by the sun. After forty years, a rhubarb plant with two intertwined stems grew from where it had fallen, and from this plant emerged Mashya and Mashyana, the first mortal couple and ancestors of all humanity. From his body came the metals of the earth, gold and silver and iron, under the guardianship of Khshathra Vairya.

Keyumars

Ferdowsi's Shahnameh presents Gayomard as Keyumars, the first king who taught humanity to wear animal skins, established the foundations of civilization, and ruled from a mountain throne. His reign ended in tragedy: his beloved grandson Siamak was killed by a div, and Keyumars himself perished of grief and demonic assault. Hushang, Siamak's son, avenged the killing and founded the Pishdadian dynasty.

At the Frashokereti, Gayomard will be the first among all humanity to be resurrected. The first to die will be the first to rise.
