Description

Hurling a stone at a great serpent, Hushang missed his mark — but the rock struck flint, sparks flew, and dry grass caught flame. The serpent escaped, yet what was revealed mattered more: fire, the gift that would warm humanity, forge their weapons, and begin civilization itself.

Mythology & Lore

The Discovery of Fire

The Shahnameh presents Hushang as the grandson of Keyumars, the first human, and the first king of the Pishdadian dynasty. His most celebrated deed was the discovery of fire. While hunting, he saw a great serpent and hurled a stone to kill it. The stone missed the serpent but struck a rock. Sparks flew and ignited the dry grass. The serpent escaped, but Hushang recognized what had been revealed: fire. It gave humanity warmth and the ability to forge metal. The Sadeh festival, celebrated fifty days before Nowruz with great communal bonfires, commemorates that moment.

The Avenger and the Lawgiver

In the Shahnameh, Hushang avenged the death of his grandfather Gayomard, who had been killed by the Black Div. Leading the armies of humanity alongside beasts and birds who rallied to his cause, he hunted down the demon and destroyed it.

Beyond fire and vengeance, Hushang taught humanity to extract iron from ore and to divert rivers for irrigation. He organized society and created systems for resolving disputes. His reign of forty years laid the foundations upon which his son Tahmuras and grandson Jamshid would build.
