Description

Saurva drives rulers toward despotism, turning authority meant to protect into cruelty. Angra Mainyu created him to oppose Khshathra Vairya, the Amesha Spenta of just dominion, and his shadow falls behind every tyrant who bends power to appetite.

Mythology & Lore

The Archdeava

Angra Mainyu created six archdaevas to stand against the six Amesha Spentas. Saurva was made to corrupt power. His target is Khshathra Vairya, whose dominion protects the weak and guides rulers toward justice. Saurva turns that same authority into a weapon. The just king becomes the tyrant. The protector becomes the oppressor.

The Vendidad names him among the daevas and condemns the abuse of authority. His corruption works at every scale: the cruel master and the dishonest official serve his cause as surely as the tyrant on his throne.

The Shadow of Zahhak

The Shahnameh's Zahhak shows the tyranny Saurva embodies at its extreme. Ahriman kissed Zahhak's shoulders, and two serpents grew from the wounds. Each day they demanded the brains of young men. A thousand years the reign lasted. When Fereydun overthrew him and bound him beneath Mount Damavand, just rule returned.

At the Frashokereti, Saurva and the other archdaevas will be destroyed. Righteous power will govern creation unopposed.
