Description
Master spirit of every Slavic forest, who can tower above the treetops or shrink beneath a leaf. He leads disrespectful travelers in endless circles and gambles with the Vodyanoy over fish and deer, but treats those who honor his domain with unexpected kindness.
Mythology & Lore
What Fell into the Forest
When God cast the rebellious angels from heaven, they fell into the world. Those who landed in water became the Vodyanoy. Those who landed in forests became the Leshies. Each forest got its own, and larger forests got several, each ruling a particular territory. The name comes from les, the Slavic word for forest. He is literally "the forest one."
The Wrong Shadow
His most common form is a tall peasant, sometimes impossibly tall, his head level with the treetops. His beard looks made of lichen. His eyes glow green. He can shrink to fit beneath a leaf or grow to overtop the oldest oak. When he walks among humans disguised as an old forester, the careful observer notices: his shadow points toward the sun instead of away from it, and his clothing has no buttons.
Circles
The Leshy makes the familiar unfamiliar. Paths curve back on themselves. The forest edge recedes as the traveler approaches. Landmarks shift. The victim walks for hours and finds himself where he started. Some wander until they collapse. Some are never seen again.
The offenses are simple. Enter without greeting him. Kill more game than you need. The forest has rules older than any village, and the Leshy enforces them without warning.
But he is not only a punisher. Lost children find themselves guided home by an invisible presence. Honest woodsmen are led to game and warned of wolves.
The Bargain
Shepherds made formal pacts at the start of each season. The terms were specific: the Leshy could take a certain number of animals from the flock in exchange for protecting the rest from wolves. Hunters left the first kill of the season beneath a particular tree. Before entering the forest, one spoke aloud: "Grandfather Leshy, let me pass through your realm in safety."
Afanasyev records tales of hunters who made deeper bargains, gaining supernatural woodcraft in exchange for their shadows or their unbaptized children. The gift always worked. The price always grew. The hunter found himself drawn deeper into the forest, season by season, until he stopped coming home entirely.
Whirlwinds and Wagers
Neighboring Leshies fought over territory. The signs were unmistakable: trees crashed and whirlwinds tore through the canopy. Villagers found swathes of forest leveled in straight lines, as if two invisible armies had clashed.
The Leshy gambled with the Vodyanoy and the Polevoy, wagering the creatures of their domains. Fish appeared in forest pools far from any stream: won from the Vodyanoy. Deer wandered into open fields and stood confused: lost to the Polevoy.
On October 17, the feast of Saint Erofei, every Leshy drove his animals into the earth and went to sleep for the winter. The forest fell silent. It was safer then, but also unguarded.
