Noon

The Polevoy appears when the sun stands highest and heat presses down on the open land. He takes the form of a figure made entirely of grain stalks, with grass for hair and eyes like harvest moons. Other accounts describe a man dressed in white, sometimes old, sometimes young, always glimpsed at the edge of vision. Whirlwinds spinning through the grain mark his passage across the fields.

He shares the noontime with Poludnitsa, the Lady Midday. She is the lethal one, bringing madness and death to those who fail her riddles. The Polevoy is more ambivalent: a guardian who can turn hostile.

Boundaries

The Polevoy watches over field margins, where one family's land meets another's, where the cultivated meets the wild. Farmers left offerings at these borders: bread, eggs, or the first sheaf of the harvest. He punished those who moved boundary stones to steal their neighbors' land and protected those who respected proper limits.

Lost in the Grain

Like the Leshy in his forest, the Polevoy leads the unwary in circles. People who had crossed a field a hundred times found themselves unable to find the path home, the grain closing around them like walls. This danger peaked at noon, when heat shimmer distorted vision and exhaustion clouded judgment. Those who worked through the customary noon rest, defying the unspoken rule that midday belonged to the spirits, found themselves at the Polevoy's mercy.
