Description

Sixteen years in the infidel's dungeon, and still he does not break. When he escapes at last, he rides his grey horse home in disguise, draws the bow no other man can string, and stops his betrothed Banı Çiçek's forced wedding with an arrow through the ring on her finger.

Mythology & Lore

Betrothal, Captivity, Return

Banı Çiçek would not accept a husband who could not match her. When Bamsi Beyrek, son of Bay Bure, came to claim her, she challenged him to shoot against her and to wrestle her. He met her in both. Only then did she agree to the match.

Before the wedding, Bamsi Beyrek rode out on a raid against the infidel lord at Bayburt. He was captured. For sixteen years he sat in a dungeon while the world above moved on without him. His family mourned him as dead. A man named Yaltıcık pressed Banı Çiçek to marry him instead. She refused as long as she could.

Bamsi Beyrek escaped. He rode his grey horse home and arrived on the day of the forced wedding, the feast already laid, the bride already dressed. He entered in disguise. No one recognized him. Then he picked up the great bow that had stood untouched since his capture, the bow no other man could string. He drew it. He put an arrow through the ring on Banı Çiçek's finger, and the wedding stopped. Dede Korkut blessed the reunion.
