Description

A dog-headed spirit who hops through the deep forest on a single leg, Aroni captures humans who venture too far from the village. Not to harm them. To teach them the secrets of every healing plant, then release them as fully trained herbalists.

Mythology & Lore

The Forest Classroom

Aroni has the head of a dog and only one leg, and he moves through dense forest with uncanny speed. His canine senses let him track any herb by scent alone and follow a human through any terrain. Those who encounter him in the forest depths and survive the terror of his appearance are not his prey. They are his students.

Traditional accounts describe how Aroni takes his captives to his forest dwelling and instructs them in the properties of medicinal plants. He teaches the incantations that activate a plant's healing power and the taboos that must be observed when gathering medicines. The experience is terrifying, but captives who pay attention and show respect are eventually released as powerful herbalists. Their knowledge bears a mark no human teacher could leave.

Osanyin's Agent

Aroni works under Osanyin, the orisha of herbal medicine. While Osanyin governs botanical healing at the divine level, Aroni carries out the practical work of identifying and training worthy students. Some traditions name him as Osanyin's messenger, sent to ensure that sacred plant knowledge reaches the human world through properly initiated healers.

Like Osanyin himself, Aroni stands on one leg, a trait shared among forest spirits associated with herbal lore. Herbalists who trace their lineage to an ancestor seized by Aroni carry a credential no apprenticeship can grant: wisdom received from the spirits who guard the forest's secrets.
