Mythology & Lore

The Terrible Strong One

Ayar Cachi was the mightiest of the four Ayar brothers who emerged from the cave of Tambo Toco to found the Inca dynasty. When he hurled stones from his sling, they struck with the force of landslides: mountains shattered and ravines split the earth open. His name carries 'kachi,' the Quechua word for salt, tying him to primal substance and elemental force. As the brothers journeyed from Pacaritambo toward Cusco, Ayar Cachi's displays of power grew more alarming. A single throw could demolish a hillside. His shout alone made the ground tremble. The other three brothers watched him reshape the landscape with every step and understood that a man who could unmake mountains might unmake everything they hoped to build.

Betrayed by Brothers

The brothers conspired against him. They told Ayar Cachi that sacred golden vessels had been left behind in Tambo Toco and must be retrieved for the journey ahead. Ayar Cachi turned back. When he entered the cave, his servant Tambochacay, acting on the brothers' orders, rolled massive stones across the entrance, sealing him inside forever. His siblings walked on toward Cusco, lighter by one.

Sealed in the Mountain

Ayar Cachi did not go quietly. Sarmiento de Gamboa records that when the imprisoned brother tried to force his way out, the whole mountain shook and the earth trembled around Tambo Toco. But the cave held. His terrible strength, unchecked in the open world, was now contained in rock. The sealed cave became a huaca, a sacred site where ancestral power lay imprisoned, and the trembling ground told travelers he still raged beneath the surface.
