Mythology & Lore
Sister of the Founders
Mama Raua was the fourth of the sister-wives who emerged from the central window of Tambo Toco alongside the four Ayar brothers. Some accounts pair her with Ayar Uchu, the brother who climbed the sacred hill of Huanacauri and was transformed into stone upon its summit. If so, she watched her husband become a huaca, a permanent presence on the hilltop overlooking the Cusco valley. Mama Raua walked on with the remaining siblings, arriving in the valley where only Ayar Manco still stood in human form to found the capital. The chronicles preserved her name in the founding roster without recording individual deeds.
