When Monster Slayer and Born for Water had finished with the great Anaye, Cold Woman stood before them and asked to live. Without her, she said, the land would never rest and the spring melt would never come. The Twins let her stay.

The Sparing
After Monster Slayer and Born for Water had slain the great Anaye, they turned to the beings that remained. Cold Woman stood before them. She was not like the monsters who hunted and devoured. She brought frost and killing wind, the slow death of exposure, but she did not hunt.
She asked to live. Without winter, she told the Twins, the growing season would never end. The land would exhaust itself. Snow fed the rivers in spring.
The Twins spared her. Cold Woman remained, and winter kept its place in the world.
