Description
When the Hero Twins raised their weapons against Old Age, she answered with reason: without her, youth would never yield to wisdom and generations would never turn. Life would stagnate in a paradise that was actually a prison.
Mythology & Lore
The Meeting
After Monster Slayer and Born for Water destroyed the great Naayééʼ, they continued hunting. Not everything dangerous wore the shape of a monster. Old Age waited for them on the road, an old woman who did not run. The Twins raised their weapons.
She spoke. Without her, she said, youth would never end, and neither would its foolishness. No one would grow into the knowledge that comes only with years. The elderly, who carry ceremonial memory and teach the young how to live, would never exist. Parents would never make way for children. The world would fill with the young until there was no room left, and no one in it would know anything worth knowing.
The Sparing
Monster Slayer and Born for Water lowered their weapons. They had set out to make the world safe for the Diné, not to strip it of everything difficult. A world without aging would be as broken as the world full of monsters had been. They let Old Age walk away, and she has walked among the people ever since.
